Goodbye to all those zeros as Turkey welcomes a new currency
On 1st January 2005 Turkey welcomed a new currency, the New Turkish Lira or Yeni Turk Lira in Turkish, which is replacing the old Turkish Lira, whose value had been eroded by decades of inflation.
The shiny new currency has six fewer zeros, making everyones life alot easier!
It will be a drawn-out farewell for the old Turkish Lira, which is legal tender until the end of 2005 and which can still be exchanged at branches of the Turkish Central Bank (TC Merkez Bankasi) until 2016.
