In days gone by Kalkan was a small village of fishermen and farmers. Now it's a popular resort which tumbles down a mountainside to a small harbour. The cobbled streets are lined with shops and restaurants, while most of the old stone cottages have been converted into holiday homes or small boutique hotels.
The beach in town is small and pebbly, so most people head to nearby Patara with it's miles of sand or Kaputas (pictured right). Xanthos, the ancient Lycian capital, and the Saklikent gorge are within easy reach, or another popular local excursion is to the villages in the mountains behind the resort, where rural life continues much as it always has done.
Kalkan is an excellent base for diving in the clear off-shore waters.
