Fethiye is a bustling market town on the edge of a wide bay overlooked by pine forested mountains. The promenade is dotted with waterside cafes and several excellent restaurants, and a new marina has also opened this year.
Back from the water, the bazaar district is a colourful grid of cobbled streets lined with shops selling handicrafts, leather bags and hand-woven carpets. The town also has a huge weekly market where you can buy spices, honey or fresh herbs gathered in the mountains. It is also an important yachting center.
Good local transport makes Fethiye a perfect base for exploring a string of fascinating historical sites, such as Pinara, Xanthos and Teos.
The popular resort of Oludeniz is just a short drive away too.
Getting There
