Travel Guide — Cappadocia

Cappadocia is a truly unique region in central Turkey. Over thousands of years nature has carved an amazing geological wonderland of pinnacles, crags and canyons from the soft volcanic rock. The local people have added to this breathtaking landscape by excavating homes, villages and even whole cities from the ground. As a centre of early Christianity, Cappadocia is also dotted with rock-cut churches and monasteries, many decorated with stunning frescoes.

Today Cappadocia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist destination protected inside a national park. The area’s many cave hotels offer visitors the chance to experience "troglodyte" living in a room carved from the soft rock. Like ordinary hotel rooms, these cave rooms vary in size and levels of comfort, although all benefit from the natural insulation of the rock, so you'll find them cool in summer and cosy in winter.

Getting There

Cappadocia is a short drive from the regional airports of Kayseri and Nevsehir, which are served by Turkish Airlines scheduled flights from Istanbul or Ankara.

There are good bus connections from across the country.
