This small resort on the north Aegean coast is literally surrounded by history. Built on the ruins of ancient Assos, the modern-day village of Behramkale is a cluster of stone houses beneath an acropolis crowned by an ancient Greek temple dedicated to Athena (pictured). It's a wonderfully scenic spot with sweeping views across the sea to the Greek island of Lesbos.
Ancient Assos was famous for its school of philosophy, which was led by Aristotle during its heyday before the Persian invasion of 344 BC. A long cobbled lane leads down to a tiny fishing harbour overlooked by several excellent hotels and restaurants. Despite being a popular spot with mainly Turkish tourists, strict building controls have helped conserve the village's rustic charm. The joys of Assos are exploring the windswept ruins, working up an appetite for fresh fish eaten at a waterside table - particularly in the quieter off-season.
Getting There
Assos is a 1 hour drive south from Canakkale via the small town of Ayvacik (not to be confused with Ayvalik).
There are dolmus from Ayvacik every hour in summer, less frequently in the off-season.
